ACL and Menisectomy Knee Rehabilitation Scarsdale

The ACL is one of the four ligaments in your knee, and is the most common of knee ligament injuries. It can be torn if you land awkwardly from a jump, or suddenly stop or change direction. If you tear your ACL, you may hear a pop, or crack, at the time you are injured. The most common method for repairing ACL injuries is arthroscopic surgery.

The meniscus is tough cartilage that rests between the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia (shin bone). It is made to conform to the surfaces of the bones upon which they rest.

The goals of physical therapy and rehabilitation after ACL surgery are to rebuild strength and regain full motion. Immediately after surgery, the main focus of rehabilitation is to protect healing soft tissue structures, improve knee flexion, extend range of motion and increase lower extremity strength

While recovering from an injury it is essential for joints to return to proper alignment. A good rehabilitation program will include exercises that target joint stability. This is most important following a lower extremity injury.

We will assess the joints for misalignment or structural defects caused by the injury, and check the joint alignment and while testing for weakness or deficits in soft-tissues (tendons, ligaments, and cartilage). Correcting these deficits may require taping, bracing or possibly surgery. Once the joints are returned to proper alignment, joint stability is addressed. Specific exercises are prescribed to help restore function. These exercises target balance, proprioception, range of motion, flexibility, strength and endurance. In order to make a full recovery from an injury, an athlete must fully participate in their rehab program.
